This worked well for a while, using only the latter half of the screen, till recently it started seizing up even in this half of the screen. This scanner will break your heart. For 80% of scans the moving scanning part will get stuck and seize up as it reaches the 66% mark on the screen surface. So I recently took to using smaller notebooks so that I would use less surface area of the screen and thereby avoid the dreaded 2/3 area where it gets caught. I would never buy Canon again after this. I use this scanner for scanning my handwritten notebooks.
So you get exercise while you scan. It is made out of such flimsy plastic that any untoward pressure on it will cause it to seize up. The only way now to make a complete scan is to hold one end of the scanner up while the scanner is going down the screen, so as to allow the plastic wheel mechanism not to get caught as it routinely does, and then quickly adjust to tilt it up at the other end as the wheel makes its way back up the screen. The only way to do this is to rip the pages out and scan each sheet separately as the weight of any notebook or book will cause the scanner to get stuck two thirds of the way through. But even that is no guarantee to problem free scanning. True this is a cheap scanner but I would recommend you throw your $60 out the window over buying it as that way you will save yourself a whole lot of grief in attempting to perform a simple task, such as scanning a sheet of paper, that is way beyond this piece of plastic's ability.
Any recommendations for a light-weight but functional document scanner.
I was in need of a scanner for my laptop, as the interface with my HP7XXX series all-in-one sucked as far as scanning went. Overall it does the job at a good price. How about buzzy.
To this the LiDE90 has performed well, with one caveat. So if you are planning to use this in stealth mode forget it, but other than that you should be fine. After much review reading here and at Newegg, I decided that for the cost the LiDE90 was probably what I was looking for.My only real need was to scan B&W documents for work.
The carriage movement is on the loud side, meaning that in general it doesn't bother me but I would be hesitant to use it with someone sleeping in the room. It is, as many reviewers have noted, a noisy little bugger. Maybe noisy is unfair.
Color scans range in the 2mg size, greyscale 80kb. I will report back when it gives up the ghost, (as all things must).
Purchased this scanner since previous HP scanner was not compatible with Vista at all. This scanner was a huge improvement. The scan quality is good and it doesn't take up much space on my desk as well.
I scanned 6 pictures. The camera spoiled as well -the mechanism to close the lens got clogged in between and stop responding-. I loved the way this scanner worked. One more: before this LIDE 90, I had a Cannon scanner as well -I can't recall model number, I guess it was the "1200" or so-. The rest of the procedure to use the scanner is not big deal -is very convenient, by the way-.Now. The mechanism jammed at midway, making this "particular noise" I know, the noise that let you know that device simply screwed up.I believe I did not handle the scanner inappropriately.
I'm used to handle and keep all my e-devices with, -sometimes going extreme-, care. I unlocked the device as supposed to. I got the device. same failure as today with this LIDE 90.Conclusion.- I would not like to ran and rave about Cannon. Earlier, years ago I purchased a Cannon digital camera. I sent it for warranty, but I NEVER EVER OBTAINED A RESPONSE FROM CANNON, despite several phone calls and e-mails I made. Is not my personal style.
Why. That's all.Just a week after, I tried to use the scanner. unfortunately. I'm hesitating in proceeding with the warranty claim. I like to spend no more for nothing. it became broken. I just want to recommend: thing twice about when getting something from Cannon.
I'm a bit disappointed by this sleek scanner. The pop-up window doesn't point to where I want to go. My wife doesn't like that.(2) It is much slower than expected, especially at high resolutions.(3) The new scanner arrived at my house with the lock-for-shipping switch in the unlock position. The quality of scans are good. Other than being almost small enought to be portable, I'm afraid I can't recommend this Canon LiDE90 over a bulky HP or Epson box.Douglas Baty, IT specialist. Control thu the TWAIN interface (if you can access that) is good. It's advantage is that it is thin/light and doesn't require a power brick - it is powered by the USB connection. I can access the TWAIN interface thru my paint program, but not thru Canon's software.
It accepts pages up to 8-1/2 X 12.The disadvantages are as follows:(1) The polyglot of software that comes with it does not result in a plug&play product. I haven't gotten the 4 automatic buttons on the scanner to work well yet. This model is so lightweight it probably doesn't need one, but I do wonder what is happening in the QC department of the factory.Canon has discontinued this model for a new one, which, unfortunately, I couldn't wait for. This product used in my home.
